FG delivers relief items to over 1,000 flood victims in Katsina State

As the rainy season gets intense, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has restated its commitment towards alleviating the plight of flood victims in the country.

This is as no fewer than 1,000 flood victims across 13 Local Government Areas of Katsina State are to benefit from relief items to be distributed by NEMA.

 

The items were handed over to the State Government by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouk in the company of the NEMA Director-General, Mustapha Ahmed in Katsina.

 

With the volume of rainfall on the increase as a result of the August break and its attendant impact on flood prone areas, the NEMA says it is taking proactive measures to cushion the negative effects.

 

The Agency demonstrated this when the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Sadiya Umar Farouq in company of the NEMA Director General, Mustapha Ahmed handed over the relief materials to the state government for onward delivery to 13 Local Government Areas affected by flood.

 

Speaking shortly after the handover ceremony, the NEMA Director-General, Mustapha Ahmed said the relief items came in seven trailer loads comprising food and non-food items.

 

He said that, as part of proactive measures, the Agency has urged State Governments to inaugurate local emergency management committees in order to tackle disaster at the grassroots level.

Ahmed further called on residents of states to desist from building on water channels, blockage of drainages and move from flood-prone communities to safer areas and take seriously the predictions released by the agency by moving to highlands.

Receiving the items on behalf of the state government, speaker of the Assembly Tasi’u Maigari commended NEMA for the gesture promising to, ensure effective delivery to the beneficiaries for judicious use of the items.

The 17 assorted relief items delivered for distribution include; 3,000 bags of 10 kilograms of rice, 3,000 bags of 10 kilograms of maize, 3,000 bags of 10 kilograms of beans, 100 kegs of 20 litres of vegetable oil, 200 cartons of seasoning cube, 300 bags of 20 kilograms of iodized salt, 1,000 bags of 50 kilograms of cement and 100 bags of 25 kilograms of nails.

 

Other items include 300 bundles of roofing sheets, 100 packs of zinc nails, 500 pieces of mattresses, 1,000 pieces of blankets, 5,000 pieces of nylon mats, 2,000 pieces of mosquito treated nets, 4,000 pieces of five yards of Guinea Brocade, 500 pieces of wax prints and 1,000 pieces of children’s wears.
